Guild Wars 3 Playable Races
Four launch species: humans, asura, kodan, and a fourth unnamed people. No stat gaps. More later.
Guild Wars 3 will launch with four playable species. Colin Johanson’s 5 August 2026 blog made that count official, and it made the vocabulary official too: species, not races. This page keeps races in the URL so the World Hub does not break. The facts follow the new word. Named at launch: humans, asura, and kodan. The fourth is a new people whose story connects deeply to Orr’s past and has been lost to history. That fourth name is not public. ArenaNet has pointed at later in 2026 for more. The MMORPG is upcoming. The first beta is Fall 2027. Nobody is creating a character on a live shard today.
The long version of the studio approach, plus the official spotlight video, lives on playable species. Child pages carry the lore. This index is the roster: four at launch, kodan named rather than guessed, no statistical differences, and a pipeline built so more species can be added later.
The four launch species
Humans are newcomers and explorers brought through the Mists by the Six Gods. They have lived in Tyria more than seven hundred years. Cantha is the oldest holding, Elona is thriving, Ascalon is the youngest and most martial, and Margonites who worship Abaddon hold Crystal Sea coasts. Orr is their frontier. Arah is the gods’ high city. Vael spirits inspire the devout, worry farmers, and obsess knowledge-seekers. Guilds such as the Mavenwrights treat those spirits as opportunity and progress. Choosing the Vaelwardens means rejecting the easy human story that Orr is a wilderness waiting to be tamed. Danny Barnes wrote that spotlight on 13 August 2026.
Asura in this century are more surface-balanced than the later subterranean look. A little taller, some fur, still ambitious. Liz Baker’s 27 August spotlight follows the Rata Pten expedition: Archengineer apprentice Zouelle and her granddaughter Niommi founded the outpost after watching Orr’s magic erupt from Criterion Canyon. Vaelwardens first saw the arrivals as reckless interlopers. Asura saw the Order of the Vael as dogmatic. Some joined anyway, in part to learn signet artificing sanctioned in the telling by Dwayna and Melandru, binding multiple signets to one weapon. Rata Pten is now a small terranean outpost reconnecting those Orrian krewes to the depths.
Kodan are the bear people, playable for the first time. Press nicknames from the trailer, often bearkin, point at the same species. Erin Amschlinger’s 20 August spotlight is the record. Kodan worship Koda the Creator. Voices among them are attuned to Koda’s will. Janthir kodan were faithless after a Voice rejected that god. Some heard a pull to Orr after the Tughra Basin calamity and migrated south more than a hundred years before the game’s start. They sensed an ailing land, then the beauty of the Vael, and founded a settlement in northwestern Orr. Early Vaelwardens refused outsiders. Later the kodan became one of the order’s deepest alliances. A player kodan joins as Koda’s will.
The fourth launch species is unnamed. Official language is consistent across the approach post and Baker’s close: new, tied to Orr’s past, lost to history, more later. That is a gap, not a page. Do not fill it with charr, norn, sylvari, tengu, largos, or Forgotten. Those names are not on the launch four. Forgotten in particular were cited as an example of an extreme silhouette that is not viable as a playable body.
No stats, future species, and what stays rumor
There will be no statistical or mechanical differences between playable species. Johanson carried that Guild Wars 2 principle forward on purpose. Species express identity and fantasy. They do not determine the most powerful way to play. Play what you love. This page will not publish a best-race-for-Warrior table. Confirmed professions remain Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger from Gamescom 2026. No public rule locks a species to a kit. The Classes Hub is identities. This page is peoples.
The launch story is unified under the Vaelwarden banner. Players operate across the wilderness and pockets of civilization in ancient Orr. Arah is the major city. Camps are safe areas. You do not get five racial campaigns. Friction still exists inside that one story: humans arguing about taming the frontier, asura arguing about dogma versus progress, kodan carrying a delayed alliance and a god the humans do not share. The Seeker carries whoever you pick.
Future species are possible because the studio is building that way from the start. Animation, rigs, and clothing are being constrained so they can expand. If a people you want is missing at launch, there is a chance it might be added later. That is not a promise with a year attached. Extreme bodies that cannot reuse those systems stay off the table. Wishlist the game, watch the roadmap, and treat every extra name as rumor until it has an official post.
If you are using this page to decide a main, decide on tone. Human is the god-touched newcomer who can refuse to tame Orr. Asura is the surface expedition with signets on the brain. Kodan is the first-time-playable bear who came south for Koda. The fourth is a blank the studio has asked you to wait for. Nobody is statistically ahead. The Fall 2027 beta is the first time a character creator can test those sentences. Until that creator exists, this is the full honest list: four launch species, three named, kodan confirmed, no stat sheet, and room in the pipeline for later peoples that are not Forgotten.
