Guild Wars 3 vs Guild Wars 2
Timeline, movement, roles, scale, buy-to-play, and Hall of Monuments 2.0.
Guild Wars 3 is not Guild Wars 2 with a new expansion number. It is a separate upcoming MMORPG set more than a thousand years earlier, built in Unreal Engine 5, aimed at a smaller combat scale, and designed so Guild Wars 2 can keep telling its own story. If you loved map metas, World vs. World, and a nine-profession toolbox, those pillars stay in Guild Wars 2. If you wanted action-RPG movement with Guild Wars build-making and clearer tank-damage-support jobs, that is the new game.
ArenaNet’s own philosophy post placed Guild Wars Reforged, Guild Wars 2, and Guild Wars 3 on different points of the MMO spectrum so all three can stay in development. This page is the honest comparison for veterans. New players should start on Getting Started instead of this one.
Timeline and setting
Guild Wars 2 is the present of Tyria: Elder Dragons, living world, a drowned Orr raised by Zhaitan. Guild Wars 3 is ancient Orr before the Exodus of the Gods, after Dhuum was deposed by Grenth, before the First Guild War. The land is a living wilderness, not a corpse kingdom. You join the Vaelwardens rather than the Pact. Your mount is a Seeker, a Vael spirit, not a raptor you unlock in a mastery track. Arah is the only major city named so far.
That timeline is a studio constraint as much as a story choice. A sequel set after Guild Wars 2 would freeze the live game’s future. A prequel leaves Guild Wars 2’s runway open. You do not need to have finished End of Dragons, or any expansion, to follow Guild Wars 3. Very little of this era is recorded in current canon, which is why new players and veterans land in the same fog. Trailer footage shows humans, asura, and armored bear-folk (press coverage said bearkin). Asura are confirmed heading to Orr. The full playable species list is not published; do not import Guild Wars 2’s five races as a locked roster. Races tracks what is actually on the record.
Movement, combat, and roles
Guild Wars 2 added gliders and mounts after launch. Movement and combat still stop for each other more often than they flow. Guild Wars 3 starts with momentum as connective tissue: wall-run, glide, sprint, and mantle hand speed to the next mode, and that speed becomes damage. How to Play is the loop. Momentum combat is the profession spend.
Profession count is the other shock. Gamescom 2026 confirmed Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger only. Guild Wars 2’s longer list is not coming over as a copy. Roles sit closer to a trinity than Guild Wars 2. Threat-based tanking is in. A Warrior can hold with a shield; a Necromancer can hold with minions. Healing specs are unpublished. Combo fields become player-to-player physics: a shield springboard, shared fire, a Ranger vortex used as a lift. If your Guild Wars 2 identity is “every class can do every job if the rotation is right,” read roles before you pre-main a fantasy that the demo did not show.
Action camera is the default, not an option you toggle after you hate ground targeting. The Gamescom HUD used a reticle and nameplates, not a tab-target list. Elite skills charge in combat (Rampage). Stamina gates wall-runs and glides. Horizontal gear progression is the stated goal, same franchise instinct as Guild Wars 2: you should not throw away a whole set every season. Fashion Wars is expected to matter even more. None of that is a live build editor. It is a direction of travel.
Scale: about 20 in combat, no metas, no WvW
Guild Wars 2 is famous for map-wide meta-events, world bosses that eat zergs, and World vs. World. Guild Wars 3 is explicitly not that game. Large combat is about 20 players. Cities can show more. There are no Guild Wars 2-style meta-events. There is no WvW-scale PvP. There are no Heroes or Henchmen. PvP is confirmed; modes are not. If the community wants esports, Johanson said the studio would support it the way it did for the first two games. That is not a ranked ladder announcement.
Open world sits between Guild Wars 1’s instance-and-outpost rhythm and Guild Wars 2’s megaserver continents. Fewer loading screens, more contiguous Orr, camps as social hubs, Arah as the named city. Megaserver-like sharding still exists and is described as more complex because maps do not hard-cut as often. If your favorite weekly is a full-map meta, keep Guild Wars 2. If your favorite night is a four-player group that actually needs a tank, this is the pitch. Raids and other endgame were mentioned as planned; they are not named.
Business model, Hall of Monuments 2.0, and what stays behind
Both games are buy-to-play. Guild Wars 3 repeats the rule set: no subscription, no premium battle pass, no pay-to-win. Cosmetics and convenience are allowed. A collector’s edition is confirmed for launch. Platforms differ: Guild Wars 2 stayed PC; Guild Wars 3 adds PlayStation 5 beside Steam and the ArenaNet client, with day-one join-together language. Platforms has DualSense and spec notes.
Hall of Monuments 2.0 is the thank-you layer. It is being built on the Guild Wars 2 side, later in 2026 in phases (core game first, then expansions in order), and it will connect Guild Wars 2 accounts to Guild Wars 3 rewards. It is not a character transfer. Your legendary, your fractal titles, your WvW rank do not become a Guild Wars 3 Warrior. They become a monument and a gift. Playing Guild Wars 2 during the polish window is optional respect-for-time, not a required grind. Guild Wars 2 will pause annual expansions after Visions of Eternity, ship Hall of Monuments 2.0 and other quality work, then return to major updates after Guild Wars 3 ships. All three games stay in development.
What you should not expect to import: map metas, WvW, nine professions, Heroes, Henchmen, your bag of ascended gear, or a launch date. What you can expect to recognize: buy-to-play ethics, horizontal loot talk, build-making as a Guild Wars 1 echo, and a studio that would rather split fantasies across two live games than cram them into one. For prep, return to Getting Started. For the new combat, stay on momentum combat. For the rest of the reading order, use the Guides Hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Guild Wars 3 players waiting on the Fall 2027 beta.
Is Guild Wars 3 replacing Guild Wars 2?
No. ArenaNet says Guild Wars Reforged, Guild Wars 2, and Guild Wars 3 all stay in development. Hall of Monuments 2.0 is the account bridge, not a shutdown plan. See the philosophy notes.
Will my Guild Wars 2 character transfer?
No character or gear transfer is confirmed. Hall of Monuments 2.0 rewards Guild Wars 2 achievements inside Guild Wars 3. Keep playing Guild Wars 2 because you like it, not because a transfer is coming.
Is World vs. World in Guild Wars 3?
No. PvP is confirmed without WvW scale. Large PvE combat is about 20 players. There are no Guild Wars 2-style meta-events. Compare combat on momentum combat.
Do I need Guild Wars 2 lore to play?
No. The prequel in ancient Orr is designed so new players can start here. Veterans still get extra texture from knowing Grenth, Dhuum, and Arah.
Which classes carry over?
Only Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger are confirmed. They will not play like their Guild Wars 2 versions. Start at the classes hub and roles.
