Guild Wars 3 Necromancer
Scythe momentum, lifesteal, Necrotic Traversal, and minion tank ideas from Gamescom.
The Guild Wars 3 Necromancer entered the Gamescom 2026 session in the second half, scythe in hand, after the Warrior had already taught the room how walls and slams work. That order matters. ArenaNet did not present Necromancer as a reskinned Warrior. They presented a second momentum language: horizontal carry, life steal on the cut, a traversal skill with its own name, and a tank idea that lives in minions rather than a shield. This page stays inside what was shown and said. The game is unreleased. The first beta is Fall 2027. No hidden spec list belongs here.
If you liked Guild Wars 1 minion mastery or Guild Wars 2 scythe Dervish more than you liked a sword-and-board, you are in the right neighborhood — and you should still not import those bars. The confirmed kit is smaller and stranger than a franchise mash-up.
Scythe, momentum, and Necrotic Traversal
The weapon on screen was a scythe. The signature attack described in the follow-up notes is a momentum horizontal slash: the more speed you bring into the swing, the farther the cut travels, and the hit steals life. That is the opposite geometry of the Warrior bomb. Warrior spends vertical speed on the floor. Necromancer spends horizontal speed on a line. You are not jumping to grow a number; you are running, sliding, or exiting a traversal so the scythe keeps reaching.
Necrotic Traversal is the named movement skill. Public footage and interviews did not publish a full tooltip, and this wiki will not invent one. What is safe to say is that Necromancer has a profession-specific way to stay in motion, not only the shared wall-run and mantle kit. In a game where contextual skills appear in windows, a traversal that puts you across a gap is also a way to reload the slash window. Treat it as part of the damage identity, not a travel convenience you forget in combat.
Party play showed the scythe kit using the Warrior as terrain. A Necromancer vaulted off a Warrior shield to attack enemies below. That is the combo language ArenaNet wants you to notice: not a field you step on, a body you use. If your Warrior never raises the shield as a platform, your Necromancer never gets that launch. If your Necromancer never takes the launch, the Warrior is only blocking. The two kits are complete alone and incomplete as a story. Read Combat Roles for the design rule, then watch future footage for whether other professions get their own launch partners.
The same spider nest that taught fire-on-weapon versus webs also put both professions in a shared problem. The lesson for Necromancer is not that you are a fire mage. The lesson is that loadouts are prepared for the room. A scythe player who brought the wrong buff is as stuck as a Warrior who never left the floor. Guild Wars 1-style preparation — including the Elite, chosen before the fight — is the container for that idea. We have not been shown a Necromancer Elite by name. Do not copy Rampage onto this page.
Minion tanking and the jobs this kit might hold
ArenaNet raised minion tanking as a possibility: a Necromancer who holds threat through summoned bodies while the player stays mobile with scythe and traversal. That is not a confirmed trait line, and it is not a promise that every Necromancer is a tank. It is the role thesis applied to this profession. Warrior tanks with a shield and a torso. Necromancer might tank with a pack. The job on the party frame is the same. The hands are not.
Threat returning is what makes that sentence interesting. In Guild Wars 2, minions could be a damage pet or a distraction. Here, if aggro is a real system, a minion wall is a tank spec waiting for rules. Until those rules exist in a beta, treat minion tank as a design direction, not a build you can theorycraft with numbers. The scythe slash with lifesteal already gives a solo survivability hook. Minions would be the group hook. You can want both. You cannot yet rank them.
Set this kit against the Ranger. Ranger is the airborne profession: suspended attacks, slow-fall volleys, an ice vortex allies ride. Necromancer, in the public material, stays in the horizontal plane and in the graveyard logic of bodies and life transfer. A party that wants a sky player and a scythe player is not stacking two damage dealers with different cosmetics. It is stacking two movement verbs. The Classes Hub is organized that way on purpose.
Lore wrapping is light on this page because the profession has not been given a unique Orrian sermon. You will still fight in ancient Orr, more than a thousand years before Guild Wars 1, with Vael spirits in the wilds and Vaelwardens as the guild that is supposed to protect them. A Necromancer in that company is a tone clash on paper and a perfect fit in a land where Grenth has only recently displaced Dhuum and ruined temples still crawl. Do not write a fan origin. Do play the tension: death magic walking a living frontier under an order that exists to keep spirits intact.
The open questions to carry into the next showcase are specific. What is the Necromancer Elite, and does it charge in combat like Rampage? How many minions, and do they generate threat themselves? Does Necrotic Traversal share rules with wall-running or ignore them? Can the scythe slash be aimed as a projectile-like line, or is it a melee cone that only grows in reach? This primer will add those answers when ArenaNet puts them on a stage. Until then, the confirmed Necromancer is a scythe fighter who turns speed into a longer, healing cut, who has a named traversal, who can launch from a Warrior shield, and who might let minions tank. That is already a class. It is not yet a tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Guild Wars 3 players waiting on the Fall 2027 beta.
What weapon did the Gamescom Necromancer use?
A scythe. The described signature is a momentum horizontal slash that travels farther with speed and steals life. See combat for the shared momentum layer.
What is Necrotic Traversal?
A Necromancer movement skill named in Gamescom coverage. Full tooltip rules are unpublished. Treat it as part of the combat identity, not only a travel button.
Can Necromancers tank?
Possibly, through minions, which is not the same as a Warrior shield tank. Not every Necromancer will be a tank. Role rules: Combat Roles.
How does Necromancer combo with Warrior?
The demo had a Necromancer vault off a Warrior shield to hit enemies below. Combos are physical and profession-specific, not only Guild Wars 2-style fields.
Is a Necromancer Elite confirmed?
Elites are a returning loadout slot charged in the design like Guild Wars 1, but a named Necromancer Elite was not shown. Do not copy Warrior Rampage onto this kit.
