Playable Species

On 5 August 2026, Colin Johanson published Our Approach to Playable Species in Guild Wars 3 on the official site. It is the roster constitution. Four playable species at launch. No statistical differences between them. Systems built so more peoples can be added later. A unified story under the Vaelwarden banner. The word is species, not race. This page is the news desk for that post and for the official video that followed at the end of August. Child lore lives on humans, asura, kodan, and the compact index at playable races. The MMORPG is upcoming. The first beta is Fall 2027.

If you only watch one thing, watch the embed on this page: Guild Wars 3 | Playable Species Spotlight (YouTube T7-M7g9B4hA). Developers talk through why asura, humans, and kodan take the Vaelwarden banner in this century, with concept art and design exploration woven through. The fourth species is not in the video. That absence is the story, not a glitch.

Four launch species, and why the word is species

Johanson opens by retiring a Guild Wars 2 habit. Playable races, the studio decided, did not describe the biological differences between the peoples of Tyria. Guild Wars 3 will say playable species. This wiki keeps playable races as a URL so old links still work. The facts follow the new word.

Launch count is four. Two species you could play in previous Guild Wars games: humans and asura. The third is a people you have met before who will be playable for the first time: the bear people, the kodan. The fourth is new, with a story that connects deeply to Orr’s past and has been lost to history. You will have to wait. Narrative spotlights landed in sequence after the approach post: Danny Barnes on humans (13 August), Erin Amschlinger on kodan (20 August), Liz Baker on asura (27 August). Baker’s close pointed at late 2026 for more on the fourth. Until a name exists, this page will not invent one.

The four were not picked as a greatest-hits tour of Tyria. Johanson says the studio is again choosing the peoples that best align with the stories and themes of the game. They are central to the cultures and conflicts of Orr at launch. Guild Wars Reforged stayed human-focused because its story was human-focused. Guild Wars 2 built five species with bespoke personal stories, cities, animations, and cosmetics because its theme was peoples separated, then forced to band together. That quality bar made adding a sixth species a major cross-disciplinary undertaking, which is why Guild Wars 2 never did. Guild Wars 3 is trying a different pipeline on purpose.

The launch story is unified. All player characters operate as Vaelwardens across the wilderness and pockets of civilization in ancient Orr. That is the mechanical reason you do not get five racial campaigns. It is also why a kodan from a northwestern settlement, an asura from Rata Pten, and a human who refused to tame the frontier can share a camp and a Seeker. Cities can show more people than a fight. Large combat is being described around twenty players. Species choice is identity, not a private instance.

Play what you love, and leave room for later

Johanson flagged the word launch. Four species at the launch of the game is deliberate wording. Development is approaching playable characters from the beginning with the goal of adding more later. Animation systems, rigs, and clothing are being examined so they can expand. Shared technical foundations and deliberate constraints should make it easier to extend armor, clothing, and animation to additional species. If a people you want is not in the box, there is always a chance they might be added. That is a pipeline comment, not a year-two roadmap with names.

The exception is silhouette. A species with an extreme body that would need unique custom support, support that cannot leverage the systems already built, is not viable. The example Johanson gave is playable Forgotten: four arms, serpentine body. Apologies, he added, to the community member who proposed that one. Do not write Forgotten, or any other extreme body, into a leak list and call it confirmed. Do not write charr, norn, or sylvari into the launch four. They are not on the August 5 list.

The other firm stance is power. Species express identity and fantasy. They do not determine the most powerful way to play. There will be no statistical or mechanical differences between playable species. ArenaNet does not want players picking a model for a hidden advantage. Play what you love. Other RPGs do the opposite and it works for them. For Guild Wars, Johanson says this is the right call. That rule kills every best-race-for-Warrior table this wiki might be tempted to publish. Confirmed professions remain Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger from Gamescom 2026. Mix them with species in your head if you want. Do not rank them.

The official video is a recap, not a new roster drop. It collects concept art and the lore already in the August blogs: humans as Mists newcomers under the Six Gods, kodan answering Koda after a Janthir schism, asura as a surface-balanced expedition that founded Rata Pten. Developers on camera are excited to let players be kodan for the first time and to show Tyria through kodan eyes. The fourth people stay off-screen. Treat the video as color. Treat the 5 August post as law.

What this page is not: a finished character-creation screen, a promise that your missing favorite lands in year one, or a claim that anyone can play these species today. What it is: four launch peoples, one unnamed, no stat sheet, a pipeline built to grow, Forgotten off the table, and a single Vaelwarden story. Watch the roadmap for the late-2026 name. Sign up on the Fall 2027 Beta page if you want the first chance to test a creator. Until that creator exists, the honest list is humans, asura, kodan, and a blank the studio has asked you to wait for.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Guild Wars 3 players waiting on the Fall 2027 beta.

How many playable species will Guild Wars 3 launch with?

Four. Humans, asura, kodan, and a fourth unnamed species tied to Orr's past. Details: humans, asura, kodan.

Why does ArenaNet say species instead of races?

Johanson's 5 August 2026 blog says playable races did not accurately describe the biological differences between Tyria's peoples. This wiki keeps the playable races URL and follows the new wording in the text.

Will more species be added after launch?

The game is being built so more species can be added later. Extreme silhouettes such as Forgotten (four arms, serpentine) are not viable. Calendar: roadmap.

Do species have different stats?

No. There will be no statistical or mechanical differences. Play what you love. Professions stay on the classes hub.

When is the fourth species named?

ArenaNet has pointed at later in 2026. Until a name exists, this page will not invent one. The game remains upcoming; first beta is Fall 2027 on the beta tracker.
