Guild Wars 3 Humans
Newcomers from beyond the Mists, seven centuries in Tyria, and a Vaelwarden choice against taming Orr.
Humans in Guild Wars 3 are not the last garrison of a shrinking kingdom. They are newcomers. Explorers. A people who followed six gods through the Mists into a world that was never theirs, then spent more than seven hundred years trying to belong to it. Danny Barnes of ArenaNet’s narrative team put that frame on the official site on 13 August 2026. This page stays with that frame. The MMORPG is upcoming. The first beta is Fall 2027. Nobody is rolling a human on a live shard today.
The roster fact sits on playable species and the index at playable races: humans are one of four launch species, alongside asura, kodan, and a fourth people still unnamed. There are no statistical differences between them. You pick a human because the fantasy fits, not because a hidden racial passive will carry a Warrior. Geography lives on ancient Orr. The guild you actually join lives on Vaelwardens.
From the Mists to a living frontier
Humanity did not wander into Tyria by accident. The Six Gods brought them. Barnes is careful about the flight from the world of origin: the exact nature is not well understood. What the humans of this century hold is simpler. They survived the Mists. Tyria is home. Faith and determination are the inheritance. Some carry that inheritance with humility, some with pride, many with questions. The gods remain the light. The burden of a future that is more than survival sits on mortal shoulders.
By the start of Guild Wars 3, humanity already has several distinct centers of power. Cantha is the oldest, centuries deep in dynasties and tradition, proof that settlement can become civilization and civilization can become legend. Elona is prosperous and culturally vital, anchoring trade, politics, and power. Ascalon is the youngest of those holdings: banners, borders, military pride, defined by conflict and the conviction of people who fought to claim the land. Along the Crystal Sea, Margonites who worship Abaddon hold the coasts. None of those nations is a starter town on a character-creation screen. They are the map of a species that has already spread, already argued, already built.
Orr is the frontier. Raw, unfinished, and watched. Arah is the gods’ high city, a horizon of faith, ambition, and opportunity. The land is not empty. It is home to the Vael, the magical spirits that grow out of Orr’s density of magic. Humans do not agree about those spirits. The devout read the Vael as proof the gods chose well. Farmers treat them as blessing and hazard: fertility and unpredictability in the same field. Knowledge-seekers treat them as a living mystery, the engine of Tyria made visible. Guilds such as the Mavenwrights treat them as opportunity. Stone, steel, signets, artifacts: progress built with human hands. Supporters call that innovation. Opponents call it the species’ oldest flaw, boundless ambition, wearing a better name.
That argument is the human story in this century. It is not Kryta after the Searing. It is not Divinity’s Reach. Do not import a Guild Wars 2 personal story. The people you will play have not yet fallen. They are still deciding what later centuries will remember as the fall.
Why a human joins the Vaelwardens
The Order of the Vael is the oldest guild in Orr, founded to protect the spirits and the lands they inhabit. Long before guilds became engines of trade and status, Vaelwardens walked the wilds, mediated between sentient peoples and the Vael, and defended those who could not defend themselves. The order is now on the back foot. Rival banners contest the same ground. For a human, taking the Vaelwarden oath is not a default class quest. Barnes called it a powerful choice: it means stepping away from the easiest story your people tell about Orr, that the peninsula is a frontier waiting to be tamed.
Choosing the order means recognizing that the world your ancestors crossed the Mists to reach is full of lives, rules, and wonders that deserve care. It means rebuilding bonds with a people who are swiftly moving beyond concern for the Vael, eyes on a glorious and uncertain future. You stand between inheritance and responsibility. You carry the ambition of a rising people, the faith of those who crossed worlds, and the oath of an order sworn to living magic.
That is also why the launch story is unified. You do not get a private Canthan campaign that never sees a kodan camp. You operate under one banner across wilderness and pockets of civilization. Kodan arrived from the north with a different god and a different wound. Asura arrived from a surface expedition that the order first called reckless. The fourth unnamed species is tied to Orr’s past and lost to history; ArenaNet has said more should land late in 2026. Until that name exists, do not fill it in.
Professions remain a separate axis. Gamescom 2026 confirmed Warrior, Necromancer, and Ranger only. No public rule locks humans to a kit. No public rule publishes a best-species table. The Seeker will carry whoever you pick. The Fall 2027 beta is the first time a character creator can test the sentences on this page. Until then, a human Vaelwarden is a person who refused the tame-the-frontier story in a century that is busy writing it.
What will be said of humanity at the close of the Orrian golden age? Barnes left the question standing: will it be defined by what it built, by what it claimed, or by what it chose to protect? This wiki will not answer that for ArenaNet. It will keep the facts checkable. Six Gods. Seven hundred years. Cantha oldest, Elona thriving, Ascalon young and martial, Margonites on the Crystal Sea. Orr as frontier. Arah as high city. Mavenwrights as the progress guild. Vaelwardens as the refusal. Wishlist if you want the Steam reminder on the wishlist page. Read the World Hub if you want the rest of the peninsula. Come back here when a later blog names a human starter camp or a Mavenwright rank. Do not come back expecting a human creator that is already open in Arah.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Guild Wars 3 players waiting on the Fall 2027 beta.
Are humans a launch species in Guild Wars 3?
Yes. Humans are one of four playable species planned for launch, with asura, kodan, and a fourth unnamed people. Roster: playable species.
How long have humans lived in Tyria in this era?
More than seven hundred years. Cantha is the oldest holding, Elona is thriving, Ascalon is the youngest and most martial. Setting: ancient Orr.
What does it mean for a human to join the Vaelwardens?
It means rejecting the easy story that Orr is a frontier waiting to be tamed, and taking up an order sworn to land, people, and spirits. Full guild page: Vaelwardens.
Who are the Mavenwrights?
A rival human guild that treats the Vael as opportunity and progress. They are not the player banner. Contrast them with the Vaelwardens rather than treating them as a second starter faction.
When can I create a human character?
Not yet. The MMORPG is upcoming. The first beta is Fall 2027 on PC and PlayStation 5. Track access on the beta tracker.
